WHO WE ARE

Cornerstone is a United Pentecostal Church with a commitment to “Building faith, family and friends!”

We are dedicated to helping each person establish his or her faith—in God, in others, and in himself. Faith in God and His Word is the foundation on which the rest of your life can be built. We are ready to meet you at whatever level of faith you have, and start building from there.

At Cornerstone we are also committed to building and preserving strong families. Like the wise man who built his house upon the rock (see Luke 6:48), we want to help you build your home on a firm foundation that cannot be shaken by the winds of adversity.

Cornerstone is a place for building friendships that will last a lifetime and beyond. Everyone needs someone who will stand beside him or her as a friend—to share in the joy and pain of life. Whatever you are going through, we want to be your friend. And we want to help you develop supportive friendships within the body of Christ.

Our Mission Statement:
To be a 21st-century Pentecostal church by evangelizing our community and equipping people to fulfill their purpose in life, so they can then edify others through demonstration of the love of Jesus Christ.

HISTORY

Cornerstone United Pentecostal Church originated as The United Pentecostal Church and was founded by Reverend and Mrs. Richard Fosdick, along with their children, Lisa, Scott, and Jeffrey. The first service was held on September 29, 1973, in the Redbud United Methodist Church on Redbud road. Later, services were held in the Fosdick’s home. Jones Funeral Home kindly loaned folding chairs for the home services until the church moved in June 1974 to the Sarah Zane fire hall located downtown on the corner of Loudoun and Fairfax Lane.

The church congregation moved to several other locations before finally purchasing property off of Welltown Road and constructing their own building. The congregation moved into its new building in June of 1981. In April of 1996, the mortgage was completely paid off.

On May 22, 1996, Pastor Fosdick resigned the pastorate to accept a position in administration at Apostolic Bible Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota beginning July 1, 1997. On April 14, 1997, Reverend and Mrs. Jeff Dillon and their daughter, Kayla was voted in to assume the new pastorate. Their first service was held on June 22, 1997.

The church experienced great growth during the following year. A significant milestone was a Holy Ghost rally held in Alexandria, Virginia where ten people from the Winchester Pentecostal Church were filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. The growth continued until a complete renovation of the existing building was needed. All the classrooms were gutted to expand the sanctuary to accommodate 200 people. A house and 3 acres adjacent to the church property were purchased in October 1999 to house the Sunday school classes. The house required some remodeling to meet the needs for which it would serve. The basement was finished into three Sunday school rooms and an office, and the carport was enclosed to make a nice-sized youth room.

In December of 2000, another acre of land, with a garage and other small buildings, adjacent to the church property was purchased to prepare for future expansion. In 2002, the congregation made a united effort of sacrificial giving and raised funds to pay off the debt on the Sunday schoolhouse. In 2003, a fully paved parking lot was completed.

In, 2007, the church contracted Zion Builders to add on a 40 x 100 educational wing. After its completion in 2008, the Sunday school classes were moved from the house into the new building. The house was transformed back to living quarters for ministry staff. In 2015, the sanctuary was remodeled again to accommodate 60 more people and the debt for the educational wing was completely paid off. Plans are currently underway with Zion Builders to add on a 400 seat sanctuary.

As we reflect on 45 years of ministry to our community, we are thankful for everything that has been accomplished. As we look ahead to the future, we anticipate greater growth than ever before. We believe the Lord will add to the church daily such as should be saved! We want to continue to shine out the light in a darkened world and offer to those whose lives need to be restored.

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid” (Matthew 5:14)
